7-29-13 ~No sew halter tops for 18" American Girl
I want to start sewing again, so I was looking through my fabric to see what I have. As I was looking, I found the remains of one of my brother's really old shirts. One of the sleeves (#1) was intact and attached to the remains of the shirt (which I cut off), and the other (#2) was mostly intact and separate (this one I had to trim up a bit). Here's how they turned out.
Halter Top #1
This halter top is pretty rounded around the top (nearest her neck). It's longer than top #2, since I didn't have to trim this up. I tied it off with a (nice and soft) drawstring salvaged from someone's old shorts.
(the shorts are from Nicki's Tie Top and Shorts, and I don't know where the sandals came from) |
It's a little loose in back, so I probably could stitch it to make it fitted, but for now I like the ruffled look just above the string.

Halter Top #2
This top is a bit shorter and has a pointed top, since I had to trim it a bit. This top is also a bit loose, but rolling the fabric along the top edge gives it a neat look and disguises that fact. I took a strip of fabric off the remains of the shirt, folded it in half to get the right size, and tied it around her neck (pinning the point of the top between the strap and her neck).
(the skirt is from My Twinn -yes, it's a bit loose- and the 'purse' is actually a wallet with that drawstring as the strap) |
Again, his top is also a bit loose, but I like how it looks with the fabric rolled/folded along the top edge of the shirt. This one I don't think I'll modify, unless I decide to permanently attach the neck strap.

Halter . . . skirt?
On a whim, I decided to try putting them together to form a dress. Halter top #2 is the top, and Halter top #1 is the skirt, put on upside down. I put the back seam on her right side, to make the skirt a little bit asymmetrical.

The belt is, once again, the drawstring from the first picture. I said it was nice and soft :D. Put together like this, the belt is just for show and not actually required to hold it up. I just like the way the soft grey color looks against the teal color of the dress.
